The plans develop

For a number of years I have wanted to visit some of the battle sites of the American Civil War (1861-1865). This is in part driven by the concept that one cannot understand how the U.S. behaves unless you know the history of the American Civil War. I always enjoy researching history before going on a trip. I have read “The American Civil War” by the British Military historian John Keegan twice. I have also twice watched Ken Burns PBS documentary. This gives a great understanding of what the war must have been like and the issues involved. The war resulted in 600,000 deaths.

As I get close to leaving I am presently totally absorbed by the book "Grant" by by Ron Chernow.   It provides detailed descriptions of Ulysses S Grant's earlier life and details of the major battles in the Mexican War and the American Civil war that he was involved in prior to beating General Lee and then going on to become President of the United States.

I will begin the trip single-handed as my spouse, Penny has decided she does not want to come. During the first part I plan to visit some of the National Historic Park sites in Utah and perhaps do some hiking. I will fly home for three days from Atlanta (cheaper than buying extra health insurance) then in Atlanta my friend Hugh will join me for the second part of the trip.

I leave on Tuesday June 11th. Looking at a map on my study wall I realize I will be passing through the following 27 US States : Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Utah, Colorado, New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Virginia, Washington DC, Maryland, West Virginia, Pennsylvania,  Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, North Dakota and Montana.
